The festival season is now in session. SXSW lit up the summer music circuit this week with the first and one of the best. Unfortunately, there were more fashion faux paus like clashing prints and bright prison stripes. What’s going on? Still there were a few great chic cues. Sleek safari short suits were fab. Knits and sheer skirts showed us plenty of junk in the trunk and jewelry was a must. The muso black uniform also made a showing, with oversized 90s style coats and DMs injecting a grunge looks –thank God Courtney kept away!

The Screen Actors Guild and Directors Guild awards took place in LA at the weekend. Both big indicators as to how February's Academy Awards will go, the stars were out in force . THE HELP, Tate Taylor's civil rights era tale of black Mississippi maids, last night emerged as a late contender to challenge “THE ARTIST” at next month’s OSCARS, after taking three of the top five film prizes at the highly influential show. Viola Davis carried off the leading female actor award, with co-star Octavia Spencer taking the equivalent prize for supporting female actor and the cast of the film taking the ensemble award, widely considered the guild's version of the Oscar for best film. The Artist, a black-and-white hymn to Hollywood's golden era, was not completely shut out: Star Jean Dujardin won the leading male actor prize, while earlier in the weekend Hazanavicius took the top honour at another key Oscars bellwether, the DGA awards. This year's Academy Awards take place on Sunday 26 February. Billy Crystal is hosting for the ninth time.

Michel Hazanavicius's The Artist is a Frenchie’s lust for old Hollywood itself. Academy voters in their retirement homes must be lapping it up – art telling old artists their art was important, and still is.
In a digital era of 3D, Sony 4K, Imax, iPads and streaming video, not evenAndy Serkis’ motion-capture performances in The Adventures of Tintin or Rise of the Planet of the Apes have made it, either as feats of modern acting or as game-changing special effects. Instead, we get old hat vets like Scorsese, Spielberg, Woody Allen and Terrence Malick are back on top. Hell, even old “school negro” maids--“Gone Wit the Wind” anyone?-- are providing the entertainment – Help! There's not an iota of the experimental about the Oscars this year, nothing daring, nothing new, except a counting system that leaves us with nine nominations for best picture, a move that ends up looking like someone's made a clerical mistake.

In anticipation of his retrospective at New York's Museum of Modern Art, filmmaker Tim Burton reimagines the season's dark delights.
Taking inspiration from popular culture, Tim Burton (American, b. 1958) has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as an expression of personal vision, garnering for himself an international audience of fans and influencing a generation of young artists working in film, video, and graphics. This exhibition explores the full range of his creative work, tracing the current of his visual imagination from early childhood drawings through his mature work in film. It brings together over seven hundred examples of rarely or never-before-seen drawings, paintings, photographs, moving image works, concept art, storyboards, puppets, maquettes, costumes, and cinematic ephemera from such films as Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, Mars Attacks!, Ed Wood, and Beetlejuice, and from unrealized and little-known personal projects that reveal his talent as an artist, illustrator, photographer, and writer working in the spirit of Pop Surrealism. The gallery exhibition is accompanied by a complete retrospective of Burton’s theatrical features and shorts, as well as a lavishly illustrated publication.

On a July episode of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," the 31-year-old reality-TV star learned from a doctor that the mysterious red splotches she'd been getting on her arms and legs were symptoms of psoriasis, an autoimmune disorder that causes itchy, red skin lesions. At first Kardashian was crushed. "My career is doing ad campaigns and swimsuit photo shoots," she said during the episode. "People don't understand the pressure on me to look perfect." Sunshine, singers, polka dots, and color blocks were spotted at Lollapalooza this past weekend as music fans from all over the country descended upon Chicago (incidentally, the Windy City was also the starting point of the once traveling show) to listen to some of the biggest bands of the year. Baccarat has enlisted the fab Parisienne designer, Ms. Lechère to launch a line of jewelry highlighting crystal. The partnership kicks off this fall with Les Sous Bois, a collection inspired by the forest floor. “The sous bois is quite dark, and crystal is light and shiny,” says Lechère. “The contrast was fascinating.” The rings, earrings, bracelets, and long necklaces are divided into three groupings: Murmure centers on an oak-leaf motif; Mystère casts the crystal as a dewdrop on curled metal leaves; and Merveille features honeycomb-like structures. For Lechère, working with the ultrafine colored glass proved a welcome challenge. “Because the crystal is much more delicate, you really have to wrap it—you can’t set it like a stone,” she says. “What was in the beginning a constraint became an advantage.”

.In 2003, James Cameron called a man named Lenny Lipton to thank him for writing the book that inspired him to become a filmmaker. Back in 1975, Lipton had published The Super 8 Book, a how-to guide for using super 8, the inexpensive film stock that allowed a generation of novice filmmakers to make their first motion pictures.Introduced by Kodak in 1965, super 8 was the cheapest film around—each roll was about $5, and worked on cameras that started for under $30. Many families purchased super 8 cameras to document birthday parties and barbecues, but the handheld cameras were light enough for a child to use, and soon kids were out in the backyard, playing auteur. With the release of the new J.J. Abrams SUPER 8 film, we tried out a roll--yes Kodak still makes it--and we loved it!

While kids today can shoot HD on their iPHones, the sharp, digital images of today have rendered super 8 the picture of the past. Watching film shot in super 8—even if it was shot just last week—evokes nostalgia for the era when the film first appeared. The film is grainy and just a little bit out of focus. The colors look warm and faded—there's a spectrum of mellow tones. In the youtube age, everyone with a digital camera thinks they can direct, but if you really want to learn about filmmaking, order a roll from Kodak--still less than $15 and shoot it yourself.
Sam Raimi recommends all young filmmakers start making movies in super-8. "You have all the same basic elements that are used in professional filmmaking, so it's a chance to refine your skills and techniques," Raimi says, noting that he made his first super 8 movies in high school. "You've got to write a script, deal with camera placement, movement, angles and lenses. The actors have to be directed and orchestrated in the same manner as in 35-milimeter filmmaking."

What better time to present our definitive guide to drinking in the world’s cocktail capital than summer—high season for courting a buzz. First, consider fruit. There's a reason why Gatorade and lemonade are popular in the summer months. They rely on the sweet-and-tart balance that only lemon/lime—and sugar—can provide. This is the formula for a sour (a.k.a. sour mix). Drinks like the Margarita and the Daiquiri have spawned a million cocktails in this category. The Cosmo introduces cranberry to the equation. And if you can't decide what fruit to use, try adding whatever you have lying around to drinks like the Sangria or Pimm's Cup, powered by ginger ale (this drink sometimes even gets a slice of cooling cucumber).

The current frenzy for New Nordic cuisine is sending Scandinavian chefs crazier than reindeer on magic mushrooms, with foraging and the 'local and seasonal' mantra taken so seriously there that some meals resemble roadkill and verge clippings. Songbird heads, in case you've ever wondered, are best eaten without the beaks on. Lichens are quite palatable if deep-fried. Freshly picked oilseed rape flowers are the garnish du jour.
While such avant-garde eating is all terribly exciting, it's also a relief to sit down to a menu where the waiters don't bring a saw to your table for you to get at the bone marrow. And Medlar is precisely the sort of restaurant that, since it uses local and seasonal ingredients, makes you feel very grateful that London is closer to the Mediterranean than to the Arctic Circle.
The entire menu sounds delectable, and every dish we tried exceeded our expectations. A chilled soup of courgettes was simple and summery, subtly flavoured with chervil and very prettily decorated with tiny pansy flowers, like wildflowers in a meadow, plus fresh oysters. More robust flavours are introduced with the red wine sauce, lardons and sautéed duck heart accompanying a fried duck egg.

The Whitney Museum moves!

Good bye stiff Upper East Side! The Whitney Museum is moving downtown to the ultra vibrant Meat Packing district and it will soon add a dynamic cultural presence to an area best known for hip restaurants, exclusive clubs and trendy fashion boutiques. On May 24th, the long awaited project designed by the Pritzker Prize winner Renzo Piano finally has borken ground at the corner of Gansevoort and Washington Street, with a special celebration headed by the museum’s director Adam D. Weinberg and the Italian archistar, already acclaimed for his New York Times headquarter and the stunning renovation and expansion of the Morgan Library.

Special Sunday night for "Polaroid Artist " Jeremy Kost for the New York City release of his first monograph It's Always Darkest Before Dawn. The book, designed by Sam Shahid, comprises a selection of Kost's work with nightlife characters in both spontaneous photographs and his more constructed, abstracted collages, but all Polaroids.

The subjects include well-known faces like of NYC nightlife fixtures like Amanda Lepore and Ladyfag (often with Andrej Pejic) that also contribute with texts among with Eric Shiner. After been presented at BookMarc in Los Angeles on june 7th, there will be a book signings in New York's BookMarc too on june 21st and last night at The Box, the party presented by Susanne Bartsch and hosted by Amanda Lepore, Eric C. The Tarot. 22 cards. The major Arcana. Enough cards to give replies to any question.I had a dream about doing a tarot reading and them badger came across and sat on the cards. The tower card was the only card I could see in the reading. This is a very significant dream because I have been very stressed over an issue at work. My work has refused my ADA case to make some simple changes for my migraines as well as disallowing me to telecommute even though they have two people in my division working from home who have NO medical need at all already. Also, I only wanted to do so occasionally if I was having problems, along with having some changes in light fixtures and higher walls or putting up a beach umbrella to cover up the flourescent lighting. They denied my case and I am in processs of an appeal. I will only say I work for one of the biggest companies in America so they can afford a few small changes.

I know the tower card should not make me panic, but so many times in the past after I have gotten this card in one of my readings, I have had my life turned upside down. Ok, so if you ask me later - months, or sometimes years later, if they change was for the better, I would have to say yes. It is just going through the chagne itself can be so hard.

Like now. This change of migraine and adjusting to this new life of never going outside in day. Having all the windows covered and never watching TV. This change has been hard, but so many good things on a peronal level are coming out of it.
